Eucereon chloraenoma Hampson, 1914 Rothschild, W. 1912. New Syntomidae. Novitates Zoologicae 19: 151-186 [p. 180]. Original description, as Eucereon ockendeni sp. nov. (preoccupied by Eucereon ockendeni Druce, 1906; replaced by Hampson 1914 with the name chloraenoma). 142. Eucereon ockendeni sp. nov. ♂♀. Differs from lineatum Dogn. in the thorax and abdomen being pale yellowish grey, not grey-brown, and in the forewings being less hyaline and the pattern less distinct and grey-brown, not chocolate, and on basal half of wings almost obliterated. Length of forewing: 21-24 mm. Hab. La Oroya, Rio Inambari, S.E. Peru, 3100 ft., wet season, March 1905 (type); Santo Domingo, Carabaya, Peru, 6000 ft., dry season, June 1902 (G. Ockenden); Paramba, Ecuador, January-May 1897 (W. H. Rosenberg); Lita, Ecuador, 3000 ft. (Flemming); La Union, Caura River, June 1902 (S. M. Klages); Caracas, Venezuela. Rothschild compares the species with Eucereon lineatum (Dognin, 1891), which Hampson (1898, Cat. Lep. Phal. B.M. 1: 512-513, no. 1130) describes thus: Head and thorax reddish brown and white; abdomen fuscous, with some whitish scales at base and extremity; obscure series of white lateral spots and ventral bands. Fore wing whitish, thinly scaled; a short reddish-brown subbasal band from costa; two obliquely curved and irregularly dentate antemedial lines; a pale-centred figure-of-8 shaped discoidal patch extending to costa; two irregularly dentate and obliquely curved postmedial lines, the outer expanding into patches towards costa and inner margin; an obscure irregularly dentate subterminal line expanding into patches at costa, middle and inner margin; some terminal points on the veins and a terminal line. Hind wing hyaline, the veins and terminal line brownish. Hab. Ecuador, Loja; Bolivia, Chaco (Garlepp), 1 ♂. Exp. 46 millim. Hampson, G. F. 1914. Zool. xix. p. 180 (1912), nec Druce, 1906. Head, thorax, and abdomen white tinged with red-brown, the last with red-brown segmental lines on terminal half and ventral surface; antennae blackish; palpi brown; legs streaked with red-brown. Fore wing semihyaline whitish, the veins streaked with dark brown; a subbasal red-brown patch on costal area with diffused line from it to vein 1; antemedial line red-brown, forming a spot at costa, then inwardly oblique and sinuous; a dark brown bar across end of cell and some brown suffusion beyond the discocellulars; postmedial line brown, forming a small patch at costa, excurved below costa, very oblique and sinuous below vein 4; subterminal line brown, forming a small patch at costa, excurved and forming a patch at vein 6, incurved at vein 5, then oblique, sinuous, and forming a patch at inner margin; a diffused sinuous line before termen from costa to vein 6, between veins 5 and 3 and a spot below vein 2. Hind wing semihyaline white, the termen slightly tinged with brown towards apex and below vein 2. Hab. Venezuela, Caracas, Caura R., La Union (Klages); Ecuador, Paramba (Rosenberg), Lita (Flemming); Peru, R. Inambari, La Oroya (Ockenden), type † ♂ in Coll. Rothschild, S. Domingo (Ockenden), 1 ♂. Exp. 40-44 millim. Draudt, M. 1915. Eucereon. In: Seitz, A. (ed.), The Macrolepidoptera of the World, vol. 6, The American Bombyces and Sphinges: p. 184, pl. 25 i, as Eucereon rothschildi nom. nov. (a second replacement name for ockendeni Rothschild, itself a junior synonym of chloraenoma Hampson, 1914). (German edition: Die Gross-Schmetterlinge der Erde 6.) E. rothschildi nom. nov. (= ockendeni Rothsch. nec Druce) (25 i) greatly resembles the preceding, being likewise smaller than lineatum, with yellowish-grey, semi-diaphanous wings, with faded pale grey-brown markings which have almost vanished in the basal half. Venezuela; Ecuador; Peru. "The preceding" is E. hoffmannsi Rothschild (= E. pagina Hampson), and both are compared with E. lineatum; Draudt describes these two thus (p. 183): E. lineatum Dogn. has a reddish-brown head and thorax, mixed with white. Abdomen blackish-brown, anteriorly and posteriorly with interspersed whitish scales, with whitish lateral spots and ventral bands. Forewings whitish, thinly scaled; near the base a short, reddish-brown band; 2 antemedian, irregularly dentate lines; at the cell-end a spot in the shape of an 8; 2 postmedian dentate transverse lines, the distal one thickened to a spot at the costa and proximal margin, and a similar, antemarginal line thickened also in the middle; a marginal line and dots at the ends of the veins. Hindwings hyaline with a brownish border and veins. Expanse of wings: 46 mm. Ecuador; Bolivia. E. hoffmannsi Rothsch. is much smaller than the preceding. The forewings are not semi-diaphanous whitish, but light yellow-brownish, the markings much less distinct and of a dull wooden-brown colour, not chocolate-brown. The last abdominal ring is of a bright yellow, not dirty-brown. Length of forewings: 20 mm. Peru; Ecuador. Draudt, M. 1917. Additions and Corrections. In: Seitz, A. (ed.), The Macrolepidoptera of the World, vol. 6: p. 216. P. 184, line 1 from above, for rothschildi, which becomes a synonym, insert the name: chloraenoma Hmps.
